GET CREATIVE with PEEPS this Spring as they celebrate 72 years of marshmallow-y goodness!

Spring has Sprung, daffodils are blooming, and customers are actively searching for delicious treats to harken the season. What better symbol of the season than sugar-coated, brightly colored Peeps.
Before we share a few fun ideas to PEEP-UP your ice cream and Italian Ice menu, enjoy this brief but interesting history of this fun treat.
Peeps, the iconic marshmallow candy chicks, originated in 1953 when Just Born acquired the Rodda Candy Company, which originally made hand-piped marshmallow chicks, a process that took 27 hours to create a single Peep. Just Born then revolutionized production, automating the process and reducing the time to six minutes per Peep.
1955: Peep wings were "clipped" to give them a sleek, modern look.
1960s: Just Born began producing other shapes in the 1960s, following seasonal themes such as snowmen, snow flakes, pumpkins and more.
1980s: The Marshmallow Peeps Bunny was released as a popular year-round shape of the candy.
1995: Peeps were manufactured in different colors, such as lavender starting in 1995.
1998: Peeps were manufactured in different colors, such as blue in 1998.
2025: Peeps celebrates 72nd anniversary
Here are a few suggestions to PEEP-UP your menu just in time for Spring:
- Create Instagram-worthy Ice Cream Sundaes. Drizzle Marshmallow Topping on an ice cream of your choice, dispense a circle crown of whipped cream and then add a liberal dose of sprinkles and jelly beans. Place a bunny or chickie PEEP in the center of the whipped cream crown.
- Fluffy-Bunny Sundaes: Ladle on a dollop of colorful Cotton Candy Topping, add a healthy dash of Cotton Candy Crunch on top of vanilla or strawberry ice cream. Add a PEEP and a tuft of cotton candy to simulate a bunny tail. Cute & delicious!
- PEEP Flavorful Milkshakes- Blend an ounce or more (depending on the color you desire) of Blue Raspberry, Cherry, or Pineapple Syrup with your ice cream and top with whipped cream and a color coordinated PEEP! If you are feeling adventurous, you can always throw a Peep in the blender too. It will add color to the ice cream and a bit of texture to the shake. But be warned, Pesky Peeps have often been accused of gumming-up mixers.
- PEEP Cone toppers are fun for the kids. Add a bit of rainbow sprinkles on soft-serve ice cream, and mash a bunny or chickie into the top. It is fun to watch the Peep paint the top of the ice cream with color as its sugar starts to dissolve. Even more delightful are the sticky, colorful fingers of the child when they eat the slightly wet Peep! Napkins please! Who said Peeps aren’t fun?
- Create pre-made Peeps-on-a-Stick. 3 or more colorful Peeps skewered on a wooden stick or milkshake straw can be popped into any frozen dessert treat for a quick, easy and colorful addition. Remember that Peeps can get a bit chewier when left out of the package too long, so don’t revel in skewering too many Peeps onto too many sticks at one time.
- All of the above ice cream Peep designs can also be used with your Italian Ice or Gelatis. Chose Blue Raspberry, Lemon or Pineapple, Cherry or Strawberry bases to match the Peep color. Peeps go Italian! Ciao Bella!
So now, all you have to decide are your customers preferences for bunnies or chickies, pink, yellow, blue or lavender. Pick a theme color and lean into it! Remember – “To Peep or Not to Peep, that is the question!” If it makes you smile, and your customers praise you for your creativity, Peeps as a happy garnish can become a seasonal hit.
